8328Anytime you can bring in a 27 year old forward with character issues that averaged a quarter of a point per game in the KHL you’ve gotta do it.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Tue Dec 09, 2025 7:37 pm Blues have weirdly not shy'd away from guys with major off ice question marks this year between Mailloux, Lucic, and now Dube.

Re: News and Games around the NHL
8330So we've talked about how the Avs are having a borderline historically great season with only 2 regulation losses in 30 games. We haven't talked about how Dallas is only 2 points behind them with only one more game played. I think it might be time to just let them play a 7 game series, award the winner the Cup, and have somebody sim the rest of the season on a PS5 for the rest of the draft order.

Re: News and Games around the NHL
8332The Oilers finally acquire a goalie:
Jarry is having a solid season for the overachieving Pens, but if I'm an Oiler fan I'm not at all excited. Jarry played 12 games in the minors last year because he was so bad in the NHL. They needed to move on from Skinner, but man they better hope that Jarry works out.
Obviously this means no Binner to Edmonton trade. Not sure who else if anyone is looking for a goalie, so his odds of remaining in the Note for the rest of the season just increased a great deal.

8336That's a huge trade. I think Vancouver will do pretty well on that trade. There were rumors Hughes wanted out and they wasted no time moving him.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Fri Dec 12, 2025 6:46 pm Buium is a hefty price but you got to pay to play. Really like this deal for both teams.

8338Absolutely!! Love it for Minnesota. A GM not afraid to take a swing for the fences. It's not often 26 year old elite D-men become available. Now they have to sign him.Dave's a mess wrote: Fri Dec 12, 2025 7:51 pm Putting Blues hat aside for a moment, that trade fucking rocks.
And I'm a huge Buium fan. Desperately wanted the Blues to trade up for him and bitched and moaned on here cause they didn't and settled for Jiricek, so I like the return Vancouver got. It's never easy trading a huge fan favorite.

Re: News and Games around the NHL
8339I'm not sure 18 year old defensemen are supposed to be as good as Schaefer has been so far just wow. 8 goals 22 points playing over 23 minutes a night. Islanders are 18-11 on the season. Amazing what a top draft pick can do for an organization.

8341Bill Guerin does swing for the fences, you can’t deny that.
The aftermath on who won this trade will be interesting.

8342The Schaefer story is really cool. He separated himself as the clear number 1 pick in the second half of the season last year, but I don’t think anyone, even the Islanders, thought he’d come in and crush it right away.BillP. wrote: Sun Dec 14, 2025 2:55 amInsane isn’t it and you have to wonder what his ceiling will be. Re: News and Games around the NHL
8343In the 2023-24 season, the Canucks were the first place team in the Pacific. They had 3 point per game players in Miller, Pettersson, and the Norris trophy winning Quinn Hughes. Brock Boeser scored 40 goals. Thatcher Demko finished second in the Vezina voting. Head Coach Rick Tocchet won the Jack Adams Award as best coach. In the second round of the playoffs they came up 1 goal short of a 3 goal comeback against the Oilers in game 7, a series in which Demko missed entirely due to injury.
Flash forward to today. Hughes is gone. Miller is gone. Tocchet is gone. Pettersson's game has fallen off and he can't stay healthy. Boeser is only on pace for 25 goals. Demko has only played 35 games over the past 2 years an is nowhere near the Vezina finalist he was 2 years ago. All 3 of those players (Pettersson/Boeser/Demko) signed big contracts of varying length with full no trade clauses. The Canucks have the worst record in the league by both overall points and points percentage.
There are a lot of reasons it went wrong over the last 18 months, but boy is it absolutely startling to see how back it got that fast.

8344Petterson's fall and decline needs to be studied. He went from a 100 point guy to a 50-60 point guy and you can't even blame age or injuries on it.Dave's a mess wrote: Mon Dec 15, 2025 8:37 am In the 2023-24 season, the Canucks were the first place team in the Pacific. I've been thinking the pool of talent that is NHL quality is pretty thin. And the League keeps expanding. The best individual players are still great but the overall product isn't that good anymore.
Re: News and Games around the NHL
8346The Miller/Pettersson friction and the locker room disaster it caused was one of the all time own goals of this era of the NHL. I don't know that we'll ever know what really caused that friction in the first place or if it was just 2 wildly different personalities that couldn't stay out of each other's way. If those two had been able to figure out how to keep playing good hockey, Quinn Hughes is still a Canuck, and they're probably at the very least in the playoff picture this year.BluesSK wrote: Mon Dec 15, 2025 10:03 amLosing a few good players now is the difference between success and mediocrity.Dave's a mess wrote: Mon Dec 15, 2025 8:37 am In the 2023-24 season, the Canucks were the first place team in the Pacific. 8347I wonder how long the Seattle market keeps filling that arena? They've finished 8th, 4th, 6th, 7th in the division in their existince and are currently tied for the 2nd fewest points in hockey. They have been the exact opposite of what Vegas was coming into the league.
They have pretty much completely whiffed in the draft. Their first top two picks have a combined 9 goals on the year.
