WHY!?!?!?!?!
Size of viewing markets.
But atl failed...twice.... And phx NEVER had a spld out crowd, hell they couldn't sell out a 2000 crowd arena...
Gary and the owners don't care. They want the media market coverage for more revenue.

It's getting really stupid.

The on ice product is being watered down. The regional sports packages are substandard and they just want more and more without fixing the problems that are already there.

But, if the teams fail and no one watches or goes to games, there isn't increased revenue. What business is going to sponsor a team that can't draw big crowds and/or has games that no one is watching on TV? I think it's all about the current owners splitting the expansion fee that I am sure doesn't get included in the Hockey Related Revenue (HRR) that the salary cap is based on.

If what I just found using the google machine is correct, the NHL expansion fee will be $2 billion for each team. So, when you take that from 4 teams and split it among the other 32 teams, that's $250 million for each team. What owner is going to say no to $250M bonus? Sure the cap will go up with 4 more teams joining the HRR pool. No wonder the owners are all for this.
