This is why I truly hate the loser point. I know most do NOT agree with me, but the loser point needs to go away. If the NHL insists on this generally boring as fuck OT followed by a short skills competition, then they need to revamp the points system. That's where the hockey think I've gone off the deep end. To me, the points system needs to be changed to 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT win, and one point for a shootout win. Loser gets what they earned, nothing. I don't care if that destroys all the long standing points records. If the NHL insists on not allowing a tie and insisting on these dumb ass shootouts, then this is what I consider to be the logical progression. Cause and effect. Force this dumb ass OT and shootout and the result is changing to a point system that rewards winners and does not reward losers.

In "my" points system, the Blues would have 94 points and the Kings would have 78 points. To show why most would hate my idea, Colorado would have 141 points. The points should be representative of the teams overall performance, not protect the integrity of the 1995/1996 Detroit Redwings season. The game changes, so the points structure should as well. Finally, in my points system, ever game is worth 3 points. Not just some of them.

Thank you for listening to me ramble.

Steps down off soapbox.
Once upon a time we were all cool with a tie and it was part of the game
I want them to scrap regular season OT and shootout and go back to regulation ties.
I'm all for that options as well. I just figured since the NHL seems to like OT and the shootout, changing the points system is more likely, but I'm 100% for going back to 60 minutes and done, bringing back the tie.
2018-2019 Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues. And I was alive to see it happen!

Well look at that, some team got it correct.

The Nashville Predators' new broadcasting deal has accessibility at the forefront.

The Nashville Predators and Scripps Sports, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP), have inked a multi-year media rights agreement with free over-the-air access for Middle Tennesseans to watch Predators games, beginning with the 2026-27 NHL Season. Scripps will also broadcast live 30-minute pre- and post-game shows.

I saw in the current system there are 5 Eastern Conferences team within 10 points of a playoff spot and only 3 using my suggestion. In the West it's currently 5 and under my system it would be 4. Still plenty of races.

But what surprises me is the number of teams currently in playoff spots that wouldn't even be close to a playoff spot. Currently Philly Is in 3rd place in the Metropolitan division. Using my system, they would be 18 points out of the second wild card spot. Washington would be in Philly's spot instead of 3 points out of a wildcard spot. In the Western Conference the Kings would go from WC2 to 18 points out of a playoff spot. Las Vegas would go from 3rd in the Pacific to WC2 and San Jose would be in 3rd in the Pacific.

It seems like it could work. Sure, things would change, but they always do. But, what it would do is reward teams for winning and never reward teams for losing. Seeing the numbers this late in the season and how the current system rewards teams for getting to the end of regulation and losing games shows me how bad the system is right now. The KIngs have 19 regulation wins and are in a playoff spot. San Jose, Seattle, and Calgary all have 25 wins and they aren't in the playoffs. Vancouver has 15 and they are 31 points out of the playoffs. The only way all of that is possible is if the current points system is screwed up.

Appreciate the hustle and doing the math. My conclusion is that the LA Kings are the worst playoff team since the league expanded and 16 out of 21 teams got in every year.
...but whatever, the Blues won the Cup!!!!!

That would be the 87-88 Toronto Maple Leafs who got into the playoffs with a 21-48-10 (52 pts) record

He also outscored all 3 guys he was traded for.

Doing great Vancouver!!
There really wasn't a lot Vancouver could do in regards to Hughes. He was going to walk regardless so they did get a decent return.

Minnesota better hope they win soon because there is no guarantee Hughes will remain a Wild.

He's still got another year on his contract and funny enough if the Wild think they can't resign him, I bet they could get more in return at this point. In theory they could take one playoff run with him for basically free.

Yes. They had him for two playoffs. That's not a large window of opportunity or if he tells them he plans to move along then they have to make a decision to keep him for those playoffs or trade him.

Although there is also the very real possibility the Wings will finish with more points than the Flyers/Islanders and one of those teams will make the playoffs and the Wings won't. Great system!
Wings now officially eliminated. Now we just have to root against the Avs in the playoffs.

Looks like the Blues will basically be picking 8th/14th/31st. Still very undecided what I want them to do with them as far as trade up, trade for a player, keep all 3.

There is roughly 8, maybe 9 players I'd be happy with them taking with their first pick, but for me there's a clear top 5 and then there's a group of 3 or 4, I'd be happy with but not as much as the top 5.

If they keep the Avs pick I want them to treat it more of a luxury pick and take Dmitri Borichev as a top goalie to get in the pipeline.

The Blues have tried to trade up multiple 1st round picks in the past, and it almost never happens. I don’t think we’re going to get into the top-5, and certainly not one of the top-2, by combining picks this year, either. Might have to settle for a couple more “good-not-great” players in the system, and hope we catch lightning in a bottle somehow.

Only time I can recall is the year they offered 3 first for the Kane pick, but obviously that was never going to happen. All you need is a team in that 3-5 range that doesn't want a d-man but feels it's too high to draft a Malholtra/Lawrence.

Won't matter anyway when the Blues win the lottery.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

It's hard for a team who doesn't have the winning culture or DNA to really dig down and thrive when things get harder.

It's probably my biggest concern with some of our players. When things are good, they perform well but when things get tough they disappear. It only takes a few guys who can either lead a team like that or bring a team down.

Robert Thomas definitely the face of the franchise. No playoffs 3 of last 4 years. Plays well when there's no pressure. I'm done with the shit. Let's shake this team up and move on with the new kids we got now.

By the way, I liked the speech Bowness gave. He really has proven himself as a top NHL coach. I like him a lot. Love the passion.
